Life in Hanoi for me as a southern Vietnamese is totally different. Maybe I am not very adaptable guy. Hanoians are so polite and nice. Southern people are too but in a different way. I have been living in Hanoi for 3 years so far but sometimes they drive me crazy. They act like they don’t understand what I say or they try to rip me off all the time. And my staff always teases me by mimicking my accent.
Food in Hanoi is very good, but I dislike a very small but very important thing is their recipes- they are always put too much Japanese stuff called MSG (Mi` chi’nh) which I hate!!!
Hanoi’s a very interesting city with heaps of places to go but not for the night life. There are lots of good restaurants in Hanoi, but the best food here is on the street. I’m not talking about the price. The quality is just different. Eat on the street if you really want to try Vietnamese food.

I agree about the MGS part. That was probably the one thing that makes the street dining experience in the North less appealing to me. A few years back when we visited Hanoi, I was shocked to see the street vendor heap spooonfuls of MGS into my pho. We went to have sea food one night and instead of muoi tieu chanh, I got bot ngot tieu chanh. I asked for the salt, but the vendor said she did not have any.
In any case, I enjoy reading your posts about Hanoi and your experiences. Keep up the good work =)

Can't agree more than that. Although I tend to think that Hanoi and Saigon are very much different from one another. Each region has its own characteristics, we can't really compare. Hanoi is much more like an own town whereas Saigon is an economic city center...
Anyway, I am also Saigonese, and I love Hanoi too.
Hi,
Glad to see different view from you guys, I am from centre but still hard to live in Hanoi. Maybe I am not an easy guy:)
I'm from the South but my dad is a North Vietnamese who was born in Saigon. I came to visit Hanoi a year ago, and i HATED there. People are rude, especially waiters and taxi motocylist, and everyone try to rip you off when you're a backpacker...
hahaha... if u wanna mingle with Hanoians, at least learn how they behave. They think picking on people is fun, even on friends.
Thanks so much for this post, pretty helpful data.
This can't work as a matter of fact, that is exactly what I believe.
please post more Vietnamese recipes as soon as you I will appreciate it so much!
I read really much effective material here!
I love food.
