Public Kissing

Funny dolls

The title seems very sensitive even silly. Yes, I agree but I like it.

In Viet Nam, it's quite common for people of the same sex to walk along the street hand in hand or linking arms. Maybe people from other cultures will find this a little strange, but it's normal for men and women to show physical affection. Kissing in public is a different story. About 10 years ago, Vietnamese people considered kissing as something very sacred and private which should be done in a very dark place or inside their house and not in front of anyone.

Decor

Nowadays, it's common to see young people kissing in public, along the street, in the park or even in the middle of the market. While this might be normal in western society, it's quite new behavior in Viet Nam.

What do you think? Is it similar where you come from?

eh...its america...public kissing is such a natural and normal thing [i.e. kissing at weddings]. As for myself, I don't go overboard and make out in public...maybe a kiss on the cheek to say goodbye or hello :)

Back here in our country public kissing is not so much of a fuss any longer. There are still people who get so shocked when such display of these emotions are done in parks, public vehicles or on streets or in movie houses.

Kissing in public is a normal thing in the USA.

There are those who show TOO much public affection, which I find disgusting.

public kissing is fine here..jus dun go overboard...tt will be truly gross.

but i guess the older folks will always be more conservative....;-)

pretty common for ladies but for men, i find it quite unthinkable :P

yeah, I do see this occassionally. short quick kiss, they are perfectly fine. but if couples are going indulge in lengthy mouth-to-mouth orgy, i guess they better off getting it done elsewhere instead of in the public.

I met a friend from the states in Qui Nhon on my last visit and she in turn introduced me to 2 of her old school mates. Well upon leaving I kissed my Viet Kieu friend on the cheek and reached for 1 of my new found friends and was taken aback when she froze up and gave me the "Down Boy" look, quite funny and my friend and I have had a few laughs about it now that we're back home. What happens if you try to kiss?.....gun play?

In the US we can sometimes see women hand in hand but never men unless the guys are gay (quite a common site in San Francisco, gay capitol of the world). BUT for men, a pat in the butt and a hug are OK....anyone watching/playing sports in America?

drifter1dc: If you try to kiss, you'd probably received a push or worse a hand mark accross your face and an apology right afterward. There is no "friend" kiss in vietname :)

In parts of this sad nation two guys walking hand in hand would be beaten or worse...

In my circles here in the states, you will see some quick public kissing going on between husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend but usually not too long with the possible exception of a park setting. Among some very conservative churches, there is also a greeting called the holy kiss done on the cheek with people of the same gender.

In DaNang at the park on the Han river...especially at night the boys and girls go at it pretty good. Nothing more than kissin' but I think they're doing throat cultures by the look of it.

In the US a quick kiss, as in greeting someone is ok. Couples holding hands and arms entwinded is also ok and even a short affectionate kiss, but anything more is done in private...or should be.

Really? I didnt see that when I was there last time...They might do the kissing but it is in the evening in some specific places near a bridge or something...

Thao, Yes it is.

It was late in the evening when we flew into Hanoi. Our driver took some back roads to get us to our hotel and we saw people parking on the side of the roads, a little bit away from the street. Knowing that Vietnam is such a conservative country, I wa surprise to find people making out on the side of the road. In America, we call that 'parking'. :)
Oh, and public kissing is nothing here. Teenage children here practically make-out in front of you. Not in front of their parents, but you could be standing in line waiting and if there are teenagers that are dating each other, they'll be making out!

dude your blog is cool. i stumbled upon it on google looking for a recipe for vietnamese spring roles.

anyway - i'm living in london where to lock lips is totally normal. it's such a multicultural city and so european that anything goes. you have the sickly sweet couples who kiss on the escalators on the tube, the drunken groping, or the hello kisses. most people just ignore them, step around them, or yell out 'get a room'. it all depends on how cheerful you are on the day really.

we kiss each other hello on the cheek. even this varies. some people air kiss (i hate this), some aim for your ear, some aim for the edge of your lips. there's also slight confusion when a double cheek kisser meets a single cheek kisser. it's kinda funny to watch. with my really close friends we lip kiss hello and goodbye. which is also a great way to spread germs and as a result four of us are really sick with the flu at the moment!

i was born in malaysia and like winn said - it's just not a done thing there and i have to remember to shake hands instead!

Im from argentina. In latin america young and old people kiss in public. friends (on cheeks) more than friends kiss without shame. It's quite common. I read this page and it seem you are very different to us, that's why asian and israel people who live around here are shocked when then just arrive. a friend of mine from Liban told me when that theyvdon't have sex until they are married, very interesting...
