Raining Day

Winter is coming to Hanoi with an early squall of rain and cold wind straight to the bones. The streets are so quiet and all businesses are slow but people have started to dress up. Pyjamas have disappeared, replaced by long jackets and colourful jumpers. People are again using blue plastic condoms for the rain and sometimes you can see someone with a plastic bag or a piece of paper on their head instead of a rain coat.

I don't think the cold weather in Hanoi is the same as other places in the world because the humidity makes the temperature seem much colder. A really good thing to do is wear lots of clothes, sit in front of Cafe Nang, have a hot coffee, watch people wandering around and make some silly comments.

San Francisco has the same weather during the rainy season Nov. through April, and then in the summer months July and August. Same temperatures, same humidity, and same wind. This is one of the reasons I am desiring an escape to Vietnam.

You said: «People are again using blue plastic condoms for the rain». I'm a bit dense: actual condoms? Worn over the head as berets maybe? I'm trying to visualize....

Hi all,
Winter in Hanoi is such a really special season and as I mentioned in the post, people using condom means rain coat and they use real plastic bags for covering their heads. I think this is very funny, don't you guys think so?

Hi Hau,
Of course I remember you, I only know one web site and it's http://www.vietnamworks.com/. I hope it could help you somehow. I am from Hanoi so that I have no idea about Ho Chi Minh city but I think that's a good place for work but Hanoi is a nice place to live. Good luck mate.

"ao mua" means "raincoat" is a Vietnamese slang for condom, but the real raincoat is not a condom. It appears funny to you, because you know the slang. To others it only sounds stupid and confusing.
