Viet Thai Corn

Thai corn and Viet corn are so popular in winter in Hanoi. The sellers will try to tell you that they are selling Thai corn instead of Viet corn saying it is sweeter and therefore more expensive. To make sure, you should try one seed. Thai corn is usually bigger than Viet corn. Even the corn water in which the corn is cooked is sold. It is really sweet, healthy and lots of people drink it with ice or warm.

When eating, you can choose between steamed corn and grilled corn. The steamed corn is more popular on the big streets in the city than grilled corn. They are normally the same price - just cheap.

the corn silks are silky fibers that are found under the leaves & on top of an ear of corn. there are usually discarded prior to cooking or eating.

i wonder how many people knows that the corn silks have many therapeutic uses which includes urinary disorders, help cleanse kidney & bladder, relieves for gout or arthrtis. :)

I really am enjoying this blog, godknows, fascinating, I will ome back and read regularly.

I don't really care for corn (childhood, long story ) but my husband really enjoys it - I could cook the cob for him, and have the silky fibres fresh or lightly steamed with/over my own vegs....from your nom de plume and the way you write, I feel you, and possibly slurp!, have long term australian associations...

When I was growing up in Zambia, I loved eating steamed or grilled corn. I liked the grilled because it was great to carry with you for later because you could easily transport it and break off kernals as you wanted some, but steamed corn always tastes so good.

Hi,
I like corn, surely prefer Viet corn than Thai. Although Thai corn is sweeter, Viet one is more glutinous. However, in Hochiminh City, it's hard finding a stall with good Viet corn now. Most of the youth (who usually buy and eat "a little bit here and there") prefer Thai.
Have you ever heard a story about the corn of 2 shores of Tien river? They said that once you buy corn from this riverside, just eat and don't bring it to the other 'cos the corn will get worse.

Hi Poppy,
I haven't heard about that story yet but it sounds interesting. The differences of both corns give people choices and I love both of them in some way.
Alison, glad that your husband likes corn and you atleast use some of it for your salad.
Cheers
