Kitchen God Day

Cookers

Happy Kitchen God day! I remembered when I used to live in my city, Nha Trang, and on this day, I saw many people throwing their old cookers out onto the street and buying a new one for the coming year.

Hoa Dao

I don't really know if northern people do the same thing as we do in the south. On these days, the Old Quarter of Hanoi is always busy and full of people all wanting to be the first people to buy their cooker and go, and it's no wonder it looks like a traffic jam for a kilometre. People also buy and release Carp fish or buy fake money, paper cars, motorbikes, and houses which they burn to release the bad luck and welcome the new year.

Happy Kitchen day and best wishes to everyone for the coming year!!!

Is that why the traffic was so bad yesterday near Cho Lon? I saw lots of people buying the charcoal cooker and I thought that it was to prepare for Tet.

My grandmother used to do celebrate this day when I was young in singapore. Saigon is reminding me so much about my childhood.

My dad is from Hanoi and he was telling me the story of Hai Ong Tao & Ba Tao today. His family didn't throw out cookers and he didn't think that it was a common occurrence (at least not during his childhood).

I would like to get one of these cookers before I leave the US again, but they're so heavy that I don't think it would be very cost-efficient to bring it on the plane to Europe. And, unfortunately, I don't know of any good Asian import groceries in Central Europe (I'll be in Croatia, just across from Italy). Any suggestions? They are such an efficient way to cook - so much heat from such a small amount of fuel!

I've never heard of this tradition. I'll have to ask my mother about it. Happy New Year!
