Pork On The Stick

Grilled pork on a stick with chilli, lemongrass and fish sauce is a common snack for Hanoians which is easily seen on almost every street in Hanoi. They can be eaten with bread, rice or simply by themselves standing right on the street.

I sometimes drink Bia Hoi at Bia Hoi corner in Ta Hien street and order my pork stick from the lady next door to drink beer with. I occasionally do this on my day off. Her pork meat is good, less fat than other places and she is friendly. Just before serving them, the lady bastes the meat with some more chili sauce. It's the best when it's hot.

it's amazing how asia food are closing related. we have it here as well by the name called satay. there are chinese, malay and indonesian with differences by the spices & mariante used. I just have some today and seeing your post makes me drool again =)

for pork, always like at least a piece of fat skewered in-between. i know it's unhealthy, but i don't really care much about this hahaha ...

btw, may i know what you call this in vietnamese? thanks!

Just curious: Are you a member and/or have family who are members of the Cummunist party in VN? I was reading you post on visiting the tunnels and I wasn't entirely clear if you were saying your friends were surprised at how they were able to survive the war and win. Were your families fighters of the north or south? Just curious as it lends to your perspective and allows me to understand from which eyes you see things through - thanks - your blog has been very fun to follow... I will be in VN for New year and know it will be fun - reading some vn blogs and gathering an understanding of different perspectives of people living there...

Hi world_wanderer, My family is comunist faminy but it doesn't mean I obbessed with the war or communism., infact, I wasn't even born when the war ended. I always write about reality, the truth about life in Viet Nam.
To Genius, I don't know what you mean? What's so bad about pork on the stick?

I love food like this! In Worcester, MA, USA, we have Bamboo Hut restaurant that makes great Viet food plus many other restaurants with SE Asian cuisine -- the best! And your new abode looks great, too. I love Vietnam, if only for the food and the people your country keeps sending stateside; I miss my Vietnamese students!

Good on you for breaking down stereotypes of Vietnam.

I visited Vietnam in '03 and '04, and saw all the SEA banners everywhere. Was good to see a follow up of what happened. Great country, amazing history.

Great pictures also! - one day I will go to the trouble of doing the same.
